Okay I think I lucked out...

Found out Second Life will only work with 1.19 and 1.20 versions, hence the error. I tried anyway to update with custom viewer over newer version and it didn't work. Searched to find an old mirror of version 1.20.15 but could not find a copy of it, maybe source out there but I wasn't prepared to compile it myself.

Just had a thought to check my other computer, and sure enough, compatible version 1.19.14 was intalled! Copied it to main computer and iwear updated it. I get the message saying the 920 isn't detected (because it's not here yet) but at least it runs.

This means apparently for anyone who updates Second Life, or for possiby any new users, native support is gone untill vuzix updates their viewer to work with the latest versions. If vuzix does not want to update each time SL offers a new version, they should keep a mirror of a compatible install of second life at the Vuzix website. A full install, not just an update to a version that's no longer availible.

You can get the older one here.
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Old_versions#1.18.1.2

Here is the direct link to 1.20.15

Thank you! I dug through that wiki, and for some reason I couldn't find it. maybe I just gave up too early. I appreciate that.

Thanks - I was able to download that version and see that the Vuzix monitor was starting to see it. HOWEVER, Second Life insists that you instead install the newer version; it won't let you continue without doing so.

I just found the solution: You have to download 1.21.6 instead.

Second Life will let you use 1.21.6 just fine, though it suggests you upgrade to 1.22 (don't!).

Head tracking is GREAT. Much better than I've seen in Mouselook with GlovePIE so far.

Thanks from a brand-new and very excited VR920 owner

Hi,

I bought the VR920 mainly for use with Second Life, and here are my findings so far.

one thing i find confusing is that the compatibilty list states Second Life has native support, but the only way i get it to work is running an older version (1.19 through 1.21, 1.20 seems to work best for me) with the iwear monitor extension installed (and if second life truly was native, that shouldnt be necessary, but correct me if i'm wrong here?)

Also on my system (2,4ghz core2duo, 8800gts, 4gb, 24mb internet connection) the stereo results are only somewhat decent standing still in a quiet sim with minimal movement. (and thats after downgrading my win7-64 to XPSP3-32) When moving around and/or movement around me causes the system to pageflip out of sync, so visiting any kind of event is kind of pointless.

Also in terms of depth the free daleglass viewer with a pair of 1$ red/cyan glasses performs way better with stuff actually popping out of the screen (headaches aside off course)

On the plus side, in 800x600 all text is very readable, i can participate in chat and do everything i usually do, including building stuff.

I Hope one of you knows the key to a good setup, cause i find myself turning of stereo most of the time, and thats not what i bought the headset for.

1) Native means that it's built into the client. So yes, it's native, just outdated. Something better than native would be a plugin, which vuzix has not developed.

2)That's not the reason, your computer is trying to get the frames out there as fast as it can, and so might put one frame up before it's finished. This isn't noticeable on a 2d screen, but the VR920 looks bad with it. Solution? Go to nvidia control panel>Advanced 3d settings>Force Vsync>On

3)That's not how depth works. A flat screen moniter looks good in terms of a depth map, but it's not accurate to how your eyes work. What you need to do is measure the distance between your eyes and put that in for the blank. That makes it not as depthy, but it's super realistic, since it's the exact same separation as your actual eyes.
