I stumbled upon this product while reading an article about enhancing one's gaming experience. The article was about using digital projectors and 3D glasses, but it sounded more a lot more difficult to set up, let alone buying 3-5 different parts. This product seems to remove the complexity and generally sounds very much like "Plug and Play", thus making the product sound very interesting for a person like me, who doesn't want to fiddle around with a lot of manuals, wires and software.

But how "real" is it?

My intended use (if I bought the product) would mostly be gaming, currently in the MMO/FPS genre with the occasional Flight Sim. I'm all for immersive gaming, but how real does it feel? Does the feeling of watching a screen go away or diminish it? Do you get the feeling that you're not looking at a screen, but at a scene, as if you're right there? Ex, in the case of flying in a flight sim, do you get the feeling that you're in the cockpit? Information about the feeling (from users and alike) would be great.

Also, is there any way to "test" this product or a similiar one to determine if it lives up to ones expectation? I ask because I've never tried a product like this before and I wouldn't want to spend money on a product that offers no more immersion than what I currently get from a 17'' monitor

Thanks in advance.

P.S I saw a short demonstration of the product in the PC world interview and it showed some headtracking. I'm currently using TrackIR in one of my flight sims and I was wondering if the vr920 could/would replace the need for TrackIr? Also, can the vr920 be used for mobile devices, such as the iPod or does that require me to buy another type of video eyeware?

Well,

I don't have my VR920 Just yet! But It's actually in transit right now, but I'm not in America to pick it up. So I'll have to wait till I fly back, BUT I did try a similiar product stateside but it was inferior mainly due to an iPod only connection, but the technology was astonishing. I have a 22" widescreen at home and this tech is *much* sweeter for reasons listed:

a) Nobody will know what the hell you're looking at. I don't know about you but it PISSES ME THE F**K OFF whenever anyone trys to look at what I'm doing. Especially if it's my mom. Now nobody will be able to, thus pissing /them/ off because their shoulder surfing will give them no information. which makes me very happy.

b) You can now be a true mobile warrior. Get all gargoyled out, and be in transit. My setup right now is consiting of a tablet pc, VR920, two 3D mice for user input (instead of keyboard & mouse) which are holdstered in the hip location, right next to my 9's (gotta protect your investments), a webcam for outside world input, and that would have to consist of a minimal setup for Gargoyleness. (Outside of the oblivously mandatory wifi/wireless internet connection) so You can be in the real world and the virtual world, with out getting weak and lethargic by sitting in a chair because you're moving and getting exercise this way, in addition to some minor hacks which could take your physical movements and use them to charge up your battery which will be likely to die before you do (unless you're stupid enough to get run over by a bus). All the gear listed is FAR less clunky than mobile computing was 30 years ago. It might even look 'cool'. Hell, you can even wear an iron on t-shirt that says, "Don't worry, I'm from the future"

c) You can con your college/highschool into thinking it's a visual prosthesis and that you cannot see with out it, thus allowing you to aquire much needed information on critical testing dates

d) Do you really need more reasons? You are not teathered to a large, heavy screen that guzzle battery life like an SUV does gasoline. You are now wearing feather light large displays that do not make your feild of vision opaque to the real world. This is the best invention and investment since the Internet/an Internet connection.

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering if I would ever get a reply to my question

It seems I won't be able to get the VR920 anyway. So far I can understand, they only support Nvidia stereoscopic drivers and those drivers require a Nvidia card to function. It just so happens that I bought a rather expensive ATI graphics card last year (when I did a complete PC overhaul) and it so happens that ATI is not supporting stereoscopic viewing for their graphic cards, nor are there any future plans for it.

Perhaps in the future, when my ATI card has outlived its use, I may consider switching to Nvidia and then take a look on the VR920 again. I may even be so lucky that Vuzix has released next-gen VR-"helmet"

Yogo,

Just to give you a bit more hope for the future, we are working on solving the nVidia addiction in two ways: Native support, and USB Stereo.

We so far have only one studio, AxySoft in Russia, who is making games that natively support both stereoscopic viewing and headtracking. However, it is incredibly cool just installing the game and going. With their titles, you get stereo no matter what card you're using.

USB Stereo is our own idea, and it will allow stereo viewing independent of which card you are using. The functionality is built into the VR920 right now (it's the 3D Stereo control driver you're asked to install when you first plug in the VR), but we are still working on its functionality.

So, long before you get sick of your ATI card, you may find that you've got stereoscopic options with the VR.
