Dear iWear VR920 users,

The official iWear VR920 Firmware Update version 1.109.103.13 has been released and posted for download on our website.

To download this update, go to our Support / Downloads and Drivers web page (http://www.vuzix.com/support/downloads_drivers.html) and click on the VR920’s Firmware Update “download” link. Instructions for applying the update are provided as a separate download file as well as included in the update file set. Be sure to read these instructions thoroughly before attempting to apply the firmware update.

Vuzix 3D Drivers: This firmware update release (v1.1.0) enables the VR920 to utilize Vuzix 3D Drivers when used in conjunction with iWear software version 1.1.0 or greater. The Vuzix 3D Drivers enable the iWear VR920 to display supported titles in 3D stereoscopy using virtually any brand of graphics cards operating in Windows XP or Vista.

Update Compatibility: There is a ‘very small’ number of early production VR920’s that are not compatible with this firmware update. The update software recognizes these units and advises the user to contact Customer Support for assistance, without affecting the operating ability of the unit. Customer Support will determine if message was due to incompatibility or another cause and address the matter accordingly.

Bricked Units: Some VR920s failed after an update attempt using the earlier pre-release candidate of the firmware updater. This new update will recover ‘bricked’ VR920s, returning them to full operation. The update may have to be applied more than once to recover bricked units. (see the update instructions)

Developer SDK: Vuzix iWear VR920 can be used with a wide range of applications; some enabled through the iWearMonitor and its iWear Extensions. For the best possible 3D stereoscopic video quality and the smoothest tracking, native iWear support in applications is the way to go. We strongly recommend you contact the publishers of your favorite titles and ask them to add native support for the Vuzix iWear VR920. A Developer Support Program and free software development kit (SDK) is available to assist them.

The URL is wrong. Here is the correct URL:

http://www.vuzix.com/site/_support/VR920_Update_1.109.103.13.zip

Note the added "_support/" part. Another victory for the ancient art of URL guessing.

Good luck!

Edit: I just tested this on my Icuiti Brick920 (that I haven't got around to sending back yet, sorry), and now it is working perfectly again! Well done Ron, and Todd and everyone! You guys are geniuses.

Actually I haven't done the whole process yet. If you run the update program on a brick, it runs through once to debrick it, updating it to version 1.109.101.1. Then you are supposed to run through it again to update the other parts. But I am too busy enjoying the moment. Because it is working again now, yay!

The link should be fixed shortly.

When you're unbricking a unit, it's very important that you watch the message when the update in completed (see instructions). If you don't get the right message, say you're good to go, you need to run the update a second time.

After celebrating and savouring the moment for a bit (and procrastinating), I crossed my fingers, and pressed the update button again. It took 10 minutes, as it said it would, and it worked perfectly. Now I have version 1.109.103.13!

This firmware update was very smooth, straightforward, and easy.

As others have stated before me, the screen is now a beautiful blue colour when it is powered but inactive. I'm not entirely convinced that is a good idea, because it will no doubt cause (temporary) burn in. But it looks a lot prettier, and it lets the user know it is working (just not selected in control panel).

Now I'm going to test what other cool things it can do now!

The new firmware just bricked my new VR920. At the part where the "new hardware wizard" was supposed to download some firmware update driver, i selected "no not at this time" and "Install the software automatically" like the instructions said. The hardware wizard said there were no drivers available. I assumed this meant that the drivers were already installed or something, because the instructions from Vuzix didnt say anything about that. There was no option to cancel and I didnt know what else to do so I just clicked "Update"

The updater did nothing for 10 minutes, it just sat frozen with not bar progressing, so I closed it.

Now my vr920 is dead and the update program will not recognize it at all. "please plug in your vr920" is all it says as I plug the thing in repeatedly. The computer recognizes a usb device when i plug it in, but thats it.

I guess I need to ask for a replacement.

hey slybri,

try plugging it into a different usb port because if windows sees a device that has already attempted to be installed on the same port it wont even bother and vuzix firmware updater wont recognise it.
if that works and it gets stuck again it could be that the exe is corrupt, try redownloading it from vuzix's site (this is a common cause of problems especialy for dialup users because there connection sometimes get interupted and u get an incomplete download.
also, when it want u to unplug and replug the vr920 in unplug it then wait 3 seconds the press ok then when it says plug back in plug it in wait 5 seconds and then press ok, this gives windows time to recognise that it has been pulled out and then pluged back in.
please let us know how it turns out for you.

and finaly i love u vuzix u turned my expensive brick into an expensive vr920 again as if by magic
and the stereo is absolutely stunning with little to no framerate impact.

Slybri, this update seems pretty good at unbricking things. So don't panic yet.

Did you install the 1.1.0 software?

What operating system are you using? Do you have problems with it finding other drivers that you know are there?

Any answer to the "How do we make native stereo apps???" question?

The old stereo API function calls are having no effect for me. They don't even put it into stereo mode anymore (the old firmware went into stereo mode when the API calls were used).

So I'm guessing I have to use the new functions that were added to the stereo DLL in the new version. I had a quick look at the new functions with a PE file viewer, but I'm not sure how to use them.

Even without calling any stereo functions though, I can get it to show a different image on each screen, but can't make it consistent which screen is which (the user has to put it in stereo mode through the VR920 menu).

EDIT: I did some more guessing (and some decompiling) and I found the new function IWRSTEREO_SetStereo. It allows me to turn on the stereo mode. But I still can't stop it from showing the wrong eye sometimes. Having the SDK would be very useful.
