I think that the more important and useful improvement for them at this stage should be the ability to use hotkeys within each game to change the head tracking response. Moreover hotkeys in game should be very useful to change 3D stereo separation and convergence -in similar way to iZ3D drivers-. More user friendly drivers are desirable. Not all customers are prone to tweaking in the cfg files. I think that the only real value of the actual Vuzix HMD is in the applications for virtual reality with 3D and head tracking (i.e. gaming). Not at all in the image quality for movies (my old CRT monitor is much better). Considering the new coming Sony and Zeiss HMD with high quality displays (but probably without head tracking), Vuzix has to stay ahead in virtual reality applications. Here in VR is where Vuzix still can win. 1200VR are not yet perfect (display quality and optics should be improved) but they are exactly on the right way. 6TC head tracking (x,y,z, yaw, pitch , rolll), adjustable 3D stereo, full 32bit colors display with real "dark" color and real 1280x720 native resolution, optics without aberrations represent for me the ultimate gaming experience. 35 or 40 degree FOV are not at all an issue -lateral view is not a "must"- if the head tracking works well.

RE: Vuzix VR software suggestions

I'd like to see a wireless operation for data feed, with only several main stay protocals on wireless routers communicatios, Retail Box outlets would be able to create/assist in financing to meet their own demand-yet to be foisted/approved on/by the commercial environs and those subject shoppers out there besides gaming. Some games runs perfect - old-series with simple shaders. But older ones, like oblivion, crysis etc suffer.

1)Shadows. As sun in games located at infinite distance, a slight adjustment in position and direction of view, made for each eye by stereodriver, also affects sun direction, and therefore shadow drops a slight different way for each eye. I'm not sure, this could be corrected well for standart between-eye distance, but as i'm expirienced user, i find it's not big enough (i need about 3x-4x times more), and after changing config file, this shadow difference becomes noticeable. Games affected - oblivion, crysis

2)Thing not in 3d, while they should be. Not everything that should be in 3d, is actually in 3d. This can be seen if you set monitor to clone mode with vr920 as primary. While seeing 3d in glasses, you can see on monitor that no all items on screen are doubled. Those are not - not in stereo mode. In some games this is minor bug - in spore planet landscape not in 3d, while objects on surface is. In some games it's critical - in live for speed, there is no point turning on 3d, because only things in 3d is a driver, and car. Road and cones etc. are plain. And in some games it's looks like as wrong depth - in oblivion after making bigger stereo separation grass looks like it's inside hills, and it's very noticeable, so i end up setting small almost not visible grass addon.

And to the end, sometimes i see bugs caused games not tested fully. In spore for example, when you in galactic view, zooming in to planet makes glow around them doubles. (Not sure maybe this is too because i set bigger stereo separation). And in oblivion common for also nvidia stereodrivers problem with water wasn't solved too.

So for all this games i think it's not to be names "fully supported tiles", this is partially supported. Those fully supported - portal (and all half-life i think too), doom3. I think quake 4 will be too, since it's almost as "complex" as doom3 is, but it have to be tested.

This will be good to see in supported tiles filter to show up completely supported ones - where no bugs at all, and partially supported - where you need to set some patch, or tune it up someway, or turn some postprocess features off.

RE: Vuzix VR software suggestions

I don't know if this one is an hardware or software problem but to me, it makes the VR920 not enjoyable to use. That's my main reason (apart from the low resolution) for not using my VR920 anymore. There's a problem with the bit depth in only one eye. The picture in the right eye is correct. The picture in the left eye is not. When there are color gradients in the picture, not all colors are displayed so it causes visual step in colors and it gives a grainy look. It's a very bad problem because since it's not showing in both eye, it makes the picture annoying/disturbing to look at since the two eyes don't see the same colors on areas that should be at the same.

RE: Vuzix VR software suggestions

I would like Vista 64 bit support.
I use the soundcard in my pc and I don't use the one in the VR920. I would also like to compliment the " Vuzix Team", on a job well done. They have brought virtual reality, of reasonable quality, down to an affordable level, with a product that is well made, and actively supported by its manufacturer. As a matter of fact, I paid less for my VR920, than I did for my VFX1 eleven years ago. I currently have 9 titles enabled. My favorite games are, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004, Halo, and Half- Life 2: Episode One, which looks totally awesome !

But alas ( sigh ), I too am experiencing the dreaded " Yaw " problem with head tracking. Sometimes it works very well, but at other times, its kind of buggy. Unfortunately, it never works great. I suppose that some of these problems can be attributed to atmospheric conditions, and, the technological limitations of an "affordable" virtual reality system. I am confident that Vuzix is doing Their best to alleviate this problem. I myself, have a problem with the view drifting from zero while running an application. Perhaps Vuzix could assign a " Hotkey " that would center your view while running a game or application.

By the way, the " Vuzix 3D Visualizer " is FANTASTIC ! Thank you for making it available. I do hope that there will be more visualizations coming in the future. Or hey ! how about letting the user adjust the parameters to create their own visualizations ... hmmm ?

R Blaise Low

RE: Vuzix VR software suggestions

Hi thanks for the opportunity.
I would like to have larger field of view (FOV) and better resolution.

For FSX, there is a program, which is called Wideview. With this program, you can get, let's say 3 screens aligned in the same flight. When it comes to VR920, I suggest you to put 2 more screens for each eye.

One more, PS make it wireless.

Thanks

PS: Expect at least a comment about the suggestions.

RE: Vuzix VR software suggestions

For more software support you could try doing some sort of a deal with Novint.

Novint buys rights to access the source code for games, in order to add support for their Falcon, and then sells the modified software. They have a huge library of software that they are allowed to add support for at the source-code level, and deals with the major software labels.

I'm sure they would be interested in working with other companies who want to do the same thing (although they would charge you money).

Another software change I would like to see is 6DOF support built into the API and native software, even though the VR920 doesn't support it. You would then add some way to allow other software to provide the x,y,z position from seperate tracking hardware. The tracker could be a polhemus tracker, TrackIR, P5 glove, some sort of optical tracking, or whatever. You don't need to know where the tracking data is coming from, you just need to provide some way for it to be integrated with the VR920 tracking in the driver so that supported games can have 6DOF support.

I would like to see a movie player that supports headtracking in a virtual cinema. The headtracking would need to work for both sitting down and for lying on your back. You could then watch a movie in say 16:9 aspect ratio and turn your head to see the sides of the screen. I would also like to be able to watch 3D movies.

RE: Vuzix VR software suggestions

Making sure it all works under 64bit Vista is also a must, as more and more new computer are preinstalled with 64bit vista..

RE: Vuzix VR software suggestions

Hi!

I would like to see:

1. Driverlevel symmetry of yaw calibration, algorithms implemented that will adjust/smoothen travel to allow equal degree of travel/movement left and right relative to the 'Set Zero' point setting. The result would be the same amount of travel looking left and right even with less than perfect calibrations. Selectable using a tickmark/radiobutton in the calibrator software.

2. Driverlevel yaw filtering. The result would be that any game and environment could be 'jitterfree' regardless of direct Vuzix support or not. The filtering amount/value for the yaw axis should be decided by the user within the calibrator software as diffrent environments has different magnetic interference.

3. Driverlevel smoothening/non-linear operation calculations of the yaw axis. The result would be smooth and steady speed yaw movement. Closely related and would share variables with my first point. Selectable using a tickmark/radiobutton in the calibrator software.

All three at driverlevel would allow these settings to be used in mouselook emulated environments hence my request for driverlevel implementation.
By enabling/disabling/setting these values direclty in the calibrator software, the user could instantly see what effect this would have on the yaw movement/calibration thus my request is that these options was to reside in the calibrator software.

These are high on my wishlist :)

Rgds,
Troels

RE: Vuzix VR software suggestions

I'd be happy to see a config tool for editing the VR920Dx9Stereo.cfg files, either with a simple graphic preview or implemented as an option in the JPS viewer in windowed mode. Ideally there should be some generic stereo 3D driver that could enable support in any DirectX8/9/10 application. If this is not possible I would hope there could be more supported titles added on a regular basis for new games that are released. The drivers should be able to adjust the 3D settings *in-game* and also display the settings with an OSD. All the stereo 3d drivers, even going back to the old ELSA drivers, had support like this. Common options to support include separation and convergence, although there are others I'm sure you can add (near-plane, far-plane, etc.). I would also like a way to save the settings or even share settings (via XML files) with other users. I'd like to see more support for 3D video either in the Stereoscopic Player or with a native video application.

There could also be something done about the head-tracking in software. I'd like to see a more generic solution (like mouse, joystick emulation), different smoothing parameters, disabling of some axis, etc.

Most importantly I think is the 3D driver support for modern games. I think the current supported games work very well, but so many games are missing. This greatly limits the appeal of the device, it needs to support a lot more titles. I would also like to see more updates as to what is going on behind the scenes. That could be having your developers active on the forum, or maybe with a blog or something along those lines. Sometimes its hard to tell if things are being worked on or not and it would instill more confidence if the internal team were more engaged with the community.

RE: Vuzix VR software suggestions

Options to select

1)between-eye distance (ie. stereodepth)

2)Plane that corresponds to display plane depth(where both eyes gets same picture), so i can push all scene farther, or i can pull it on me, so closest objects are outside of screen

3)Smoothing rotation, so no unwanted trembling occurs

and i guess needs some minor improvements on ui, hard to find firmware version, and i'm not easily noticed status line of is vr connected, is stereo enabled

RE: Vuzix VR software suggestions

Just as I mentioned before on the forums:
- a better way of calibrating: by going through steps like i mentioned here http://forums.vr920.com/Topic2651-11-1.aspx A graphical representation like the old VFX1 software would also be much better..

- provide a solution for the current problems with the yaw-tracking, if possible at all.

- better/more gamesupport.. also for older games.. because what's a vizor without games/programs.......

- Final: More/frequent information on what vuzix is working on (like game support etc), as a lot of times it just seems we are just talking to a brick wall (last info was near the end of april)..
(oh and one more, also more(/complete) documentation on the (possible) settings in the .ini files required by the direct3dwrappers)

RE: Vuzix VR software suggestions

I'd like to have the ability to get more depth out of the 3d images; having some divergence "beyond" the screens.
